A Clarification Regarding my Opinion on NSTU Staff and NSCC Stuff

Hmmm… I’m a little concerned that people aren’t taking the time to fully read my articles. I get this impression because I’ve had several people claim that I’m against NSTU staff and for the government. I’m not too sure how they got this impression, and can’t help by shake my head at what I percieve to be a gross misunderstanding of my opinions based on an inability to properly read my long-winded and arduous writing style.… but let me explain one thing:

Last Thursday, at a rally held at my school in support of NSTU staff but against a strike (a rally I was very vocal about having)… I spoke with CBC, CBC Radio 1, CTV and Radio-Canada (French CBC).

Although I haven’t been able to find any of the interviews online, nor did I see them that night, during all of the interviews I excplicitly stated what the offical reasoning behind the rally was. At no point did I say “I’m for the government, down with teachers!” Or any other such nonsense. Nor have I ever said anything similar on this site.

I’ve never made a point to hide the fact that I don’t condone a strike by the teachers because it is taking place at my expense, but I have always said that I feel a strike in this situation is probably justifiable and is most certainly legal. But I didn’t say any of that while I was talking to the news. And do you know why? For the same reason the 10% of faculty who don’t want a strike aren’t on the news saying as much… because they’re part of something bigger than them. I’m part of the student body of NSCC. It is the single largest grouping of individuals throughout this whole affair and I have maintained since day 1 that we are being virtually neglected throughout this process.

When I say I’m angry at NSCC for not providing us with information, I’m talking about the management and administration of NSCC. The people who have voted to strike aren’t NSCC, they’re NSTU. It is a clear and important distinction.

I have at no time personally attacked any individual. I have criticized decisions and policies made by the above-mentioned groups and given that those decisions and policies effect me… well, I have every right to do so.

In conclusion: If anyone wants to critize me for anything I’ve said, I happily welcome the discussion. But make sure you have all of the facts.

And before you criticize me for not doing enough or for misdirecting my efforts… you need to ask yourself if you’ve done even a fraction of what I have with regards to this. I’ve done interviews in both official languages with 4 separate news organizations, clearly stating that the government is in the wrong and this should be resolved without a strike. I have constantly and regularly updated this website with information and my opinion in the hopes of bringing awareness to this situation and fostering discussion. While the traffic on this site is minimal, it is significant in that it is the very best traffic I can currently achieve.

While at school I have tried to remain positive regarding the looming strike deadline. I have assisted people with schoolwork and am preparing several ways for both my class and school to communicate unoficialy should a strike happen. You can find links to them on the main body of this site in the left-most sidebar.

I’m not saying all of this to say “look how awesome I am.” I’m saying all of this to say: “I’m kind of a flaky idiot, and look at everything I’ve done.” I dropped out of highschool with 5 credits after 3 years back in 1999… and look at everything I’m trying to accomplish. Look at everything I have accomplished.

If every student were as vocal as I am regarding this… do you think the government would be ignoring us?

If every student were as demanding about information as I am… do you think NSCC would take so long to provide us with any real details or assurances?

And if you’re not like me… why is that? It’s your money. It’s your time. It’s your life.
